Poultry Culture for Profit: by Rev. T. W. Sturges (Author)
Poultry Culture for Profit: by Rev. T. W. Sturges (Author) (9781852590055)

In revising this book we have tried to present a simple guide for those who wish to keep poultry as a profitable hobby. This follows the tradition already established in the earlier editions. Without introducing complex technical terms, the text takes the reader step by step through the procedures followed . Provided the birds are managed as shown there should be satisfactory yield of eggs and meat. In addition there is no more satisfying hobby than keeping birds.

Measurements have been kept as in the original book. Although the metric system is now being adopted it was felt that the domestic poultry-keeper would prefer teems he understands readily.

The Orpington Fowl: by Will Burdett (Author) & Joseph Batty (Author)
The Orpington Fowl: by Will Burdett (Author) & Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857363432)

This is the history of the famous Orpington Fowl, from its introduction by William Cook in 1886 and other dates, for different varieties, up to the present time. It covers all the stages, the triumphs and difficulties. Therefore, in many respects, it represents the history of the Poultry Fancy and poultry farming because William Cook was the inventor of poultry farming in the sense that he produced the birds which were profitable, and made them available all over the world. Moreover, many of the leading poultry farmers bred Orpingtons and showed them at major shows, thus spreading the word on the excellent merits of the birds. The old advertisements reproduced are a story in themselves. The two authors have collectively more than 100 years experience in poultry. In deciding the content of the book the authors have steered a middle road and included all important topics which directly affect Orpingtons.

Poultry Show & Showing by Dr. Joseph Batty
Poultry Shows & Showing: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857361889)

Shows have been functioning since the 1840's and they encouraged the development of new breeds and the establishment of standards in Britain, the USA and other countries.  They provide an excellent stage on which the skill and devotion of breeders can be seen and rewarded.  In addition, there is the encouragement of a rather special hobby, which is fascinating as well as useful - even bantams produce eggs for the table, thus paying for their keep.

There is a now a background against which advice can be given.  Matters such as breeding, the type of stock, the requirements for utility or exhibition, preparing the birds, training them, spotting the faults and other relevant aspects are all covered.  The author has made a special study of the key features for individual breeds and gives these with appropriate explanations.

Chapters include: History of the shows; Development of the breeds; The main requirements; The TYPE; Poultry combs; Tails; Legs; Other features; Likely defects; Show preparation; Judging of poultry.

Poultry Characteristics Tails: Signed by Joseph Batty
Poultry Characteristics Tails: Signed by Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857361773)

This is a one of a kind Special book Signed by Dr. Joseph Batty and Dedicated to Silvio Mattacchione who published and distributed books for Dr. Joseph Batty.

The domesticated fowl has developed from the Jungle Fowl and has gradually evolved over many generations. the most significant changes tool place after 1850 , due primarily to the discovery of a number of new breeds, notably the Brahmas, Cochin and Langshans, and secondly, to the so-called "Hen Fever" that started around that time. This was the heyday of the poultry shows when all levels of society were stimulated to take part in producing standard breeds of fowl for the many shows that were organized.

The earlier birds had the conventional Jungle Fowl tail or the whip tail of the Malays and similar Asian fowl. With the introduction of the new breeds, brought about by crossing with the three breeds mentioned, a multitude of newly formed characteristics emerged. The Brahmas and Cochins introduced a larger size and heavily feathered birds. On the tail there were introduced the "cushion" and the soft, mounded collection of feathers; the tall, hard sickle feathers were no longer apparent. This applied to Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Jersey Giants and many others. the diversity was enormous and all had to be set down in the standard descriptions.

Japanese Long-Tailed Fowl: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author)
Japanese Long-Tailed Fowl: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857363142)

The long-tailed fowl is so named because its tail continues to grow to great lengths, thus making the species and associated breeds quite unique. The tail of fine species may reach up to 30 feet. In Britain and North America there are the Yokohamas and Phoenix, which originated from the same source as the Japanese Long-tailed Fowl. This book examines the history of these unique breeds and examines the ways for achieving the appropriate results in tail size. The Sebright Bantam: SIGNED by Joseph Batty (Author)
The Sebright Bantam: by Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857361698)

The Sebright Bantam is quite unique for many reasons:

Created specifically around 200 years ago by Sir John Sebright, who was fascinated by animal breeding.  The hen feathering and delicate lacing, characteristics of the breed, provide unusual plumage, not seen on any other bantam, except possibly Poland's, which are quite different in other ways.  The carriage, general demeanor, the strutting walk and the jaunty wings, provide a combination of features which, together, give symmetry and beauty.  Diminutive size which brings it into the category of one of the smallest bantams.  The female is around 18 oz. and the male 22 oz.  (510 to 620 g).  In the USA, they tend to be slightly larger.  The Japanese at minimum weights may be slightly smaller, but the others, all still quite small, are heavier;  eg. Pekin and Old English Game.  The heavy breeds, such as Indian Game, Wyandotte and Tuzos can be twice as heavy.  The head should be of a good size, topped by an extraordinary Rose comb, containing elaborate workings and finished off with a point at the back, known as a leader.

In this book the standards are discussed in detail, each specific requirement being stated and explained. There are many illustrations to show the good and bad points of specific illustrations of birds. The shows held by the original Sebright club almost 200 years ago must make the breed one of the first exhibition birds; the start of show in an organized way was around 1850.

This breed was to endure the many social changes and today remains a firm favorite for those who wish to keep a diminutive bantam with no equivalent in large fowl.

Concise Poultry Colour Guide: SIGNED by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author)
Concise Poultry Colour Guide: SIGNED by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) (9781857362107)

This is a one of a kind Special book Signed by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) and Dedicated to Silvio Mattacchione who published and distributed books for Dr. Joseph Batty.

Originally published as a picture guide to the various breeds of poultry and their colors it was first produced for the Centenary of the Poultry Club in 1977. At the time it was stated by a number of writers that this was the first exhaustive treatise on color to appear since Victorian times.  This new, revised edition although of a smaller format, has a much larger number of pages and contains much more information on color. With more knowledge on genetics the inheritance of color is better understood, but still the experienced fancier is the one who is able to produce and improve the complex and varied patterns found in many breeds.

Color Illustrations are provided for the standard breeds of poultry, including large fowl, bantams, domesticated ducks, geese, and turkeys, which are based on paintings by the Hampshire artist, Charles Francis. Each breed is described in brief terms. Information is also included concerning the evolution and origins of poultry, color patterns, and breeding as well as a glossary of terms. This new fifth edition contains additional b&w illustrations to show the points of a fowl.

Besides the colored plates which cover 48 pairs of birds of different varieties, there are monochrome illustrations which show the shape and type of the different breeds. Partridges & Francolins their Conservation, Breeding & Management: by G.E.S. Robbins (Author)
Partridges & Francolins their Conservation, Breeding & Management: by G.E.S. Robbins (Author) (9780906864456)

Partridges and Francolins: their conservation, Breeding and management is the second in a new series published by the World Pheasant Association devoted to gamebirds.  First and foremost this book provides much practical advise and guidance to those interested in the captive breeding of these species, but, it goes much deeper than that.  The importance of properly con-coordinating captive breeding into species conservation planning is examined and the book draws on the recommendations of the Action plan written by the World Pheasant Association.

With paintings and photographs of some 90 species in color, this book could almost be described as a field guide in addition to being a practical book for the aviculturists and conservationista concerned with partridges and francolins.

Artificial Incubation & Rearing: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) Paperback 1st edition
Artificial Incubation & Rearing: by Dr. Joseph Batty (Author) Paperback 1st edition (9781857360516)

For many hundreds of years the practice of artificial incubation has been developed.  The Egyptians were probably the first to become very skilled with artificial incubation as were the Chinese.  The former developed special incubation ovens in which hatched vast quantities of eggs.

In more recent times there has been the development of the thermostatic capsule and from that point great successes have been achieved.  This book explains all the basic principles and great practical advice on how the eggs of many species can be hatched and the chicks reared.

Childhood in Edwardian Sussex The making of a Naturalist: by Margaret Hutchinson (Author)
Childhood in Edwardian Sussex The making of a Naturalist: by Margaret Hutchinson (Author) (9780946474134)

Her parents, Hebert and Elizabeth Hutchinson brought them up in a very old farmhouse on the top of Marley Heights 700 feet above sea level.  They enjoyed a complete countrified life.  There was no gas or electricity and climbing up to bed with a guttering candle is one of the author's early memories - yet they had  two deliveries of post daily, while tradesmen could be relied upon to call for orders and to deliver the goods quickly.

In their somewhat frugal life the garden, farm, woods and meadows were an unfailing attraction and cost nothing; the children were never bored.  they careered along the lanes in their donkey cart and roamed far and wide.  With cows, pigs and chickens, they were self supporting to a large degree, plus the back breaking summer chore of whortleberry ('urts') picking.

The book is illustrated thought, not only with photographs taken by "Aunt Kitty" but with delightful recollection of the immediate family, and of uncles, aunts and cousins, and above all Miss Hutchinson's distinguished grandfather, the surgeon, Sir Jonathan Hutchinson, who founded the well known Haslemere Educational Museum.
