Ferreting and Trapping for Amateur Gamekeepers: by Guy N. Smith (Author)
Ferreting and Trapping for Amateur Gamekeepers: by Guy N. Smith (Author) (9780947647476)

Ferrets are the animals of the Gamekeeper whether he is a full time professional or a part time amateur.  They are trained to hunt, keeping down vermin and maintaining a balance within the countryside.  Anyone who rears pheasants or other livestock can confirm that with out firm controls, rates and other scavengers can very quickly multiple until they over run that part of the countryside.

All the essentials are explained: feeding and management, netting, rules of safety and the best methods to employ.  the aim is to give a practical guide to an essentially do it yourself hobby.

The trapping section covers the techniques and traps employed, explaining how the latter, can be utilized to the best possible extent.  Modern methods, such as the use of gas are also examined, making the book as comprehensive as possible.

Throughout the text there are photographs of ferrets, ferreting situations and other scenes.  The whole is augmented by detailed drawings of birds and animals of the countryside.

The spot of hunting is part of our national heritage and as such has been the sport of both Kings and commoners throughout the ages.

The New Forest Hunt Club first became an organized society in 1781 and is still to the fore of the hunting world today.  In this fascinating book the author a member of the present day Hunt Club, studies the history and development of the New Forest Hunt form the early days until modern times.

The struggles of the ware years, the depressions and other trails and tribulations, common to all the Hunts of the time, are described with compassion, as are the years when all was well.  The outstanding characters, both animal and hums, are vividly presented with the help of quotations and sections from sporting books and journals over the years.

The many illustrations include old etchings and prints to give a true flavor of the early days, together with many splendid photographs, both modern and old, of the Hunt members, the meets, the hounds and horses and the New Forest itself.

Way of the Gamekeeper: by Jill Mason (Author) (9780862300630)

Gamekeeping is a way of life; a career of dedicated to the protection of game and the preservation of the countryside.  Unhappily many of the large estate owners who were able to afford a gamekeeper are no long able to do so and with the ever growing threat from the anti-country sports fraternity, there is a danger that one more tradition will fade away.

An attempt has been made to make the book as practical as possible so that those interested in gamekeeping as a career can study what is involved at first hand. .The rearing of pheasants, their management, the problems encountered and many other aspects are explained and discussed.

This is a book which shows first-hand the nature of gamekeeping as it is actually practiced. All details are given and no attempt is made to hide the true nature of life in the country and the harsh reality of keeping and hunting, as well as controlling vermin.

The end result is a fascinating account of the life of the gamekeeper and the training of a young man (or woman) in that career. It is part of the Field Sports Library.

Modern Vermin Control: by Michael Roberts (Author) & Victoria Roberts (Author)
Modern Vermin Control: by Michael Roberts (Author) & Victoria Roberts (Author) (9780947870041)

The authors always had a great interest in control of vermin and trapping since young, as nearly all school holidays were spent wiht gamekeepers.

They were spurred to write this book by a plague of rates which arrived at the Domestic Fowl Trust last winter and by what, we wondered, other people would have done.  We know of those who also suffered with a plague of rats and paid $$$ to have a "rodent operative" to deal with the problem.  Apart from rates there are times when you may be bedeviled with foxes, min, stoats etc. and it is not easy to find someone with experience or specialized literature on how to deal with vermin.  Too many books and leaflets pussyfoot around the problem and do not give you the vital tips on how to make a 100 percent kill, humanely.

You will notice that we have not mentioned very often the use of the gun.  As a young trapper, the use of the gun from the end of March to the beginning of September was forbidden for fear of disturbing the game.  Traps are working for you on a 24 hour basis, and not everyone has the desire, skill or licence to use a gun effectively.

It must be stressed that all the methods described for taking vermin are legal; but every care must always be made to ensure that there is no cruelty or suffering in applying these methods.

Successful control of vermin is like being a detective, looking for signs, tracks, food, husks etc.; small things that tell a story.  This is gained by experience, patience, time, keen eyesight and observations.
