Modern Vermin Control: by Michael Roberts (Author) & Victoria Roberts (Author)

This book is not about total eradication of predatory birds and animals.  It is about slightly tipping the balance of the nature in favor of mankind when vermin, certain birds and animals, become a plague or nuisance.

The authors always had a great interest in control of vermin and trapping since young, as nearly all school holidays were spent wiht gamekeepers.

They were spurred to write this book by a plague of rates which arrived at the Domestic Fowl Trust last winter and by what, we wondered, other people would have done.  We know of those who also suffered with a plague of rats and paid $$$ to have a "rodent operative" to deal with the problem.  Apart from rates there are times when you may be bedeviled with foxes, min, stoats etc. and it is not easy to find someone with experience or specialized literature on how to deal with vermin.  Too many books and leaflets pussyfoot around the problem and do not give you the vital tips on how to make a 100 percent kill, humanely.

You will notice that we have not mentioned very often the use of the gun.  As a young trapper, the use of the gun from the end of March to the beginning of September was forbidden for fear of disturbing the game.  Traps are working for you on a 24 hour basis, and not everyone has the desire, skill or licence to use a gun effectively.

It must be stressed that all the methods described for taking vermin are legal; but every care must always be made to ensure that there is no cruelty or suffering in applying these methods.

Successful control of vermin is like being a detective, looking for signs, tracks, food, husks etc.; small things that tell a story.  This is gained by experience, patience, time, keen eyesight and observations.
