Ecology and Management of the Mourning Dove: by Thomas S. Baskett (Author) & Mark W. Sayre (Author) & Roy E. Tomlinson (Author) & Ralph E. Mirarchi (Author) (9780811719407)

The mourning dove is the most numerous, widespread and heavily hunted of North American gamebirds.  It has adapted to habitats ranging from montane valleys to hot, low deserts to congested suburbia.  Its abundance, adaptability, curious ways, unique vocalizations, darting flight and other characteristics have garnered great public interest.  but not until now has this popular and fascinating bird been fully profiled.

This book provides in-depth information on the biology, life history, population characteristics, behavior, and research on the species.  The result is a book that should become an invaluable reference tool to biologists, sportsmen and women, bird watchers and others.  It is designed to assist the morning dove enthusiast to better understand this important North American.

29 chapters in four sections cover topics as classification and distribution, migration, nesting, reproduction strategy, growth and maturation, feeding habits, diseases, survey procedures, population trends, care of captive mourning doves and hunting.

This book features nearly 400 photos, 100 tables and 75 figures, which bring to life the information presented in text. A thorough index makes information on any aspect of the mourning dove instantly available, and the references cited facilitate further study on particular points of interest.

Each topic is handled by leading experts in the wildlife field, who share the results of decades of research on the mourning dove.

Pigeons: their Structure, Varieties, habits and Management: by W. B. Tegetmeier (Author) Harrison Weir (Illustrator)
Pigeons: their Structure, Varieties, Habits and Management: by W.B. Tegetmeier (Author) Harrison Weir (Illustrator) (sm-used-0017)

Tegetmeier had been interested in pigeons and domestic fowl since his youth. In adulthood, he was recognized as an authority on both subjects. It was in this capacity that, in 1855, he found himself being introduced to another gentleman who had recently begun to show an interest in pigeons. Many years later, in an article for Tatler, Tegetmeier described the encounter:

Continuing my love for pigeons, I became the secretary of the most exclusive pigeon association, the Philoperisteron Society, which held its annual meetings in the great hall of the Freemasons’ Tavern. At one of these exhibitions I heard a voice which said, ‘Oh, here’s Tegetmeier ; he will tell you all about these birds better than I can’. I turned round, and saw [my friend William] Yarrell with a stranger, whom he introduced as Mr. Charles Darwin.
